DescriptionThe City of Norfolk’s Department of Utilities is seeking qualified candidates for a Maintenance Worker II (Reservoir Aide) in our Water Production Division. The Maintenance Worker II is needed to perform general labor duties to include the maintenance of equipment, fueling equipment . This person assists in the monitoring of the general health of reservoirs, shoreline facilities as well as general maintenance of the City owned facilities around the reservoirs.This position performs inspections daily; verifies and documents operating system conditions. The Maintenance Worker II (Reservoir Aide) also maintains records and prepares reports as needed.Essential FunctionsEssential functions include but are not limited to the following:
- Assists in the monitoring of the reservoirs, shoreline, and facilities by collecting water samples and related data using specialized equipment, treating water with various types of chemicals, and logging and entering lake data into a computer.
- Investigates requests for service and other related concerns and responds to complaints from the public and contractors.
- Loads, unloads, lifts and carries tools, equipment, and chemicals
- Makes minor repairs to boats, aquatic plant harvester and associated equipment
- Assists the Watershed Inspector with on-site inspections, construction compliance with codes, and checks for potential safety problems by conducting visual and physical inspections. Ensures compliance with erosion and sediment control standards. Maintain Daily work Log.
- Reviews emergency conditions and participates in storm preparation and recovery.
- Assists with the Tree Removal Program according to City Code and Department Policy.
- Maintains city owned facilities, including keeping dams and spillways free of vegetation and debris.
- Must be able to use small equipment such as gas-powered trimmer, chainsaw, and blower.
- Works with other crews in Water Production as needed. Work may include walking over uneven terrain for long distances.
- Must be able to swim.
- Completion of the Virginia Boating Safety Course will be required.
- The ability to trailer and operate a boat is desired, but training will be provided.
- Must be able to obtain VDACS Registered Technician certification for pesticide application.
- Ability to use computers, cameras, and similar equipment.
- All other duties deemed necessary.
- Climbs ladders and stairs, bends, walks, pushes, pulls, stoops and lifts up to 75 lbs. throughout a 9-hour work day.
- Requires knowledge of construction equipment, materials, and work tasks
Education/ExperienceWork requires the ability to read and understand written instructions, to understand simple processes and the routine operation of machines. Level of knowledge equivalent to high school or equivalency.One year experience as a Maintenance Worker, or successful completion of the Operations Apprentice program based on assignment.Valid Driver’s LicenseAdditional Information & RequirementsWork Location: 6040 Waterworks Road, Norfolk, Virginia
Work Hours: Monday through Thursday; 6:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Friday 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.This position is eligible for a one-time $5,000 signing bonus.This position is designated as an ‘Essential’ position and you may be required to work extended, rotating, after hours, weekends, and/or holiday shifts in response to emergencies and severe weather.**

If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
- The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
