Background:Management Sciences for Health (MSH) is a nonprofit international health organization with nearly 2,500 people from over 74 nationalities working in over 40 countries. Now we are renewing our commitment and refreshing our approaches to promoting locally led development (LLD), with the establishment of a relatively new Local Capacity Strengthening (LCS) Practice Area. Come join us in shaping the future of this work at MSH!We are seeking a US-based intern who is passionate and curious about how to ensure global health programming listens to and learns from the teams, organizations, and communities that are closest to development issues. The intern will contribute to the enhancement, documentation and uptake of MSH’s approach to LLD, with a focus on capacity strengthening models, tools and knowledge products.Responsibilities:
- Conduct a mapping of MSH projects that have a strong LCS component, to identify examples to document and share for learning and thought leadership (internally and externally).
- Create a repository of LCS specialists across the organization.
- Support ongoing efforts to document and improve existing, and develop new, MSH LCS tools (e.g., in leadership, management and governance; institutional & organizational strengthening; and health workforce development) as used in projects, especially those general tools that have been adapted to country contexts.
- Support the design and delivery of learning/knowledge exchange (KE) events around key LCS topics related to project LCS activities and tools identified in mapping.
- Contribute to development of new content and curation of existing resources for the in-house LCS Community of Practice (CoP), for the LCS Ambassador program, and for new-staff orientation/onboarding.
- Administrative work (
10% of the SOW), i.e., organizing files in the CoP Resource Hub and our Intranet site.QUALIFICATIONSQualifications:
- Undergraduate or graduate student in Public Health, International Development/Affairs, Anthropology, or related field
- Experience in the use of Microsoft (MS) applications including MS Word, PowerPoint and Teams
- Excellent interpersonal, coordination, and teambuilding skills
- Experience or coursework in leadership, organizational development, organizational psychology, group facilitation, design thinking, adult education and/or learning and development (L&D) is an added value
Student takeaways:To become more familiar with current trends in international development and the funding landscape for not-for-profits, specifically in terms of the push towards more locally owned and locally led programming). This involves various “localization” methods, including being more intentional about how development partners can facilitate sustainable and effective LCS. This internship will specifically enable the intern to understand – and contribute to improving – practical tools for assessing and strengthening organizational capacity, which form the basis of Capacity Strengthening Plans that foster demand-driven, tailored support to local actors by INGOs such as MSH.
