General SummarySupport the Department of Public Works in their mission to provide professional public works services to manage natural and built systems, and foster community health, safety, and sustainability. The Department’s Facilities Maintenance Division is seeking qualified candidates for the position for Custodian who are highly motivated and who strive for success by demonstrating Charlottesville’s Core Values of Commitment, Integrity, Respect, Innovation, and Collaboration.The hiring amount will be between $17.00 – 19.80 an hour ($35,360.00 – $41,184.00 Annually). As of March 28, 2024, this position is in the Labor and Trades bargaining unit in accordance with the City’s ). Starting pay for this position is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity. Future wage adjustments are subject to terms and conditions of the collective bargaining agreement between the City and the exclusive bargaining representative. The parties are in the process of negotiating the collective bargaining agreement, which will take effect on July 1, 2025.
The anticipated work schedule for this position will be (subject to change due to operational needs):
- Mon – Fri; 12:00pm – 8:30pm

If questions pertaining to the Portability Agreement, please contact the City’s Benefits Administrator at 434-970-3462.The Custodian in the Public Works Facilities Maintenance Division performs responsible semi-skilled and manual work in the care and cleaning of various City buildings and locations; does related work as required. Primarily and most frequently the work done here is under direct supervision, within one functional area, and of a routine nature.Essential Responsibilities and DutiesPerforms routine and non-routine cleaning in an assigned area or areas to provide the proper building sanitation by following prescribed frequencies.Functions include trash removal and disposal, sweeping, dust mopping, high and low dusting, wet mopping, vacuuming and carpet cleaning and extraction, restroom sanitation, cleaning glass, mirrors and fixtures, cleaning walls, vents and baseboards;Removes trash and recycling materials from office space;Responsible for the proper cleaning, care and storage of equipment and supplies;Responds to accidents or potential safety hazards such as spills and restroom problems;Ensures security of building perimeter and private officesMay include advanced hard floor care, including stripping, sealing and buffing using large equipment.Performs other duties as required.Education, Experience and SkillsMinimum Requirements:
- Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of seventh grade.
- (If seventh grade education is not achieved, minimally must be literate and have completed education through fifth grade with two years of work experience.)
- Minimum of six (6) months of commercial building cleaning experience required. (Formal training and/or certification in commercial cleaning may substitute for experience.)

) Skills: General knowledge of building cleaning practices, supplies, and equipment and ability to use them economically and efficiently; ability to understand oral and written directions; ability to get along well with others; ability to read and write; physical ability to perform manual work.Physical Conditions & Additional InformationPhysical requirements for this position as outlined by the Department of Labor: Heavy work. Ability to lift up to 100 lbs. occasionally and/or up to 50 lbs. frequently and/or up to 20 lbs. constantly to move objects. Work is typically performed walking or standing.
